We are seeking a Director of Copyright Services who will lead a program of assistance,consultancy, training, and advocacy to promote effective sharing and use of scholarly resources, including issues such as fair use, open access, author's rights, and Creative Commons licensing. The target audience for this program is the broad Cornell community, including faculty, staff, and students. The position will be reporting to the Associate University Librarian for collections, digital scholarship, and preservation services. The incumbent will collaborate with a range of constituencies, including liaison librarians, selectors, and acquisition staff in understanding service and policy development needs in the program area and serve as liaison to the Office of University Counsel on legal-related issues. This position is expected to be 50% to 75% of full-time equivalent.

Responsibilities:
  • Respond to questions related to fair use, open access, author's rights, and Creative Commons licensing from faculty, staff, and students - provide referrals as needed
  • In conjunction with the University Counsel's Office, educate the Cornell community about copyright issues through the Cornell Copyright Information website, workshops and other outreach strategies
  • Manage Cornell's copyright website at copyright.cornell.edu
  • Draft and review policies, contracts,and license agreements for digital resources, repositories, and various user services such as reserves with an eye towards use rights in a range of settings
  • Coordinate library policy initiatives in related areas such as privacy, publishing contracts, donor relations, and legislative initiatives
  • Participate in national and international efforts to improve the legal environment for libraries and archives
  • Monitor and stay current on requirements for open access deposit and collaborate with other library staff in related service areas to develop policies and procedures to support researchers in meeting these requirements
  • Partner on the development of Open Access strategies for the Cornell community, and monitor new policy developments(legislation, executive orders, etc.)
Qualifications
  • ALA-accredited Master's Degree in Library or Information Science or an equivalent degree
  • Demonstrated knowledge of copyright policies and intellectual property issues in support of creation, dissemination, and re-purposing of scholarly content (including open access, fair use, authors' rights and scholarly use of intellectual property)
  • Minimum three years of relevant experience in an academic institution with the design, provision and evaluation of related services
  • Familiarity with federal and state laws and regulations as they pertain to intellectual property and copyright
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively articulate and communicate complex legal and policy concepts to broad audiences
  • Ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and staff in a team environment
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills
  • Familiarity with information technologies and systems, and awareness of issues surrounding scholarly communications across a variety of disciplines
  • JD or other formal training or experience in intellectual property law is desirable
Expected Salary Range for this position is $65K - $75K (annual equivalent)
