2012 Spring Institute - May 18 - Syracuse, NY

Douglas Barclay Law Library at Syracuse University College of Law.  We will enjoy a varied program of QR (Quick Response) codes and it’s applications in libraries; The Erosion of Privacy – a brief history; and ALLUNY’s journey to tax exempt status. A continental breakfast and buffet lunch are included in the registration fee. Discount parking will be available for $4.50.

CUNY Law Seeks Emerging Technologies Librarian

CUNY School of Law Library is seeking an energetic candidate for a new, full-time Emerging Technologies Librarian. The Emerging Technologies Librarian will be an enthusiastic user of technology who enjoys exploring how information is evolving in a digital environment and ways it can be applied to the library services setting. We are looking for a creative individual who has the ability to work within a collaborative team environment, but is also self-directed and takes initiative in leading new projects. S/he will be committed to playing an important role in the development of the library's technology-based services that will further the library's mission of serving its community and promoting the Law School mission in public interest. Through the creation and implementation of new technologies and services, the Emerging Technologies Librarian will also need to be comfortable conversing on technological topics with a diverse group of users at all skill levels, including faculty, students and staff. The Law School will be moving this summer to a new facility in Long Island City - one stop from midtown Manhattan.

The successful candidate will be joining a library that is committed to providing the highest level of research support to students and faculty. She/he will also be responsible for providing reference services to the library community, teaching in the first year Legal Research Program in a collaborative environment, and assisting the Faculty Research Services Program. The full time position will be filled at the entry or mid-level range depending on the experience of qualified candidates.

With full faculty status, the Law Librarians are active participants and are completely integrated into the governance processes of the Law School. By working with our colleagues outside of the Library, librarians add to the rich diversity of the law school experience by having their own scholarship interests, in addition to supporting those of the other members of the faculty.

All librarians must have a J.D. and M.L.S. in order to be considered for a tenure track faculty appointment. Salary Range: Assistant Professor ($43,306 - $98,840); Associate Professor ($56,163 - $120,876). Further detailed information can be found at:

Reference Librarian Position Available at New York University Law Library

Reference Librarian/Educational Services Librarian

Responsibilities: Coordinates the teaching of a range of legal research topics to the NYU Law School community. Liaises with constituents from throughout the Law School and then arranges or provides specialized legal research instruction meeting their needs; teaching formats may include live lectures, online presentations, and individual instruction. Oversees and organizes tours of the Law Library. Serves as a member of the Law Library reference team: As such, the candidate is expected to be able to provide high-caliber legal reference service to Law School faculty and students; to serve as a liaison to designated faculty members; to assist in the staffing of the reference desk, a task that entails some evening and weekend hours; to author and update research guides, bibliographies, and other types of instructional material; to assist with collection development, as needed; and to perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • J.D., M.L.S., three to five years law library experience required, academic environment preferred. 
  • Dynamic and engaging teaching style. Substantive experience teaching legal research resources and strategies. 
  • Extensive knowledge of legal and interdisciplinary databases and print materials. 
  • Proficient in analyzing complex reference questions and in locating and disseminating responsive information and materials. 
  • Self-motivated and willing to work independently, as well as within a collaborative and collegial team of librarians. 
  • Interested in scholarly publication.
Classification: This is a tenure track position within the Law Library Faculty. The successful candidate must have the ability to meet the Law School’s requirements for promotion and tenure, including superior performance in job duties, commitment to professional service, and/or history of scholarly work.

Salary: Competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. Excellent benefit package includes health and dental coverage, retirement plan, and tuition assistance for self and certain family members.

Job Posting: Faculty Services/Reference Librarian

The University at Buffalo Libraries is seeking applicants for the position of Faculty Services and Reference Librarian in the Law Library. This is a faculty appointment with rank leading to tenure in an academic research-oriented environment. The Charles B. Sears Law Library has a collection of close to 600,000 volumes and volume equivalents and serves the research needs of the SUNY at Buffalo Law School, the University community, surrounding colleges, the local bar and bench, and the general public. The Law School, with approximately 700 JD and LLM students and 50 full-time faculty members, has a strong tradition of interdisciplinary scholarship. The position reports to the Director of the Law Library. The incumbent provides expert reference services in all areas of law and interdisciplinary subjects to the Law School community, the University at Buffalo community, attorneys, and other patrons. He or she plans and coordinates enhanced library services assisting Law School faculty with their research and teaching needs and participates in the faculty-librarian liaison program. The individual maintains the faculty publications database and the Law School and Law Library Archives. He or she trains Law School faculty research assistants in the efficient use of legal information resources. The incumbent teaches legal research in the first year research and writing program and provides support for teaching legal research in support of upper class courses. He or she participates in collection management, creates and updates legal bibliographies, and provides content for the Law Library's reference web pages. The incumbent develops and implements Web 2.0 applications for library use. The individual coordinates Law Library exhibits. Active participation in library and university committees, task forces, special projects, and initiatives is expected. The incumbent supports the Libraries’ mission which values open communication, respect for diverse perspectives, and good working relationships.

Minimum Qualifications:

A J.D. from an accredited ABA Law School or equivalent and a Master's degree in library and information science from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent are required. Both degrees must be completed by the start of employment. Sound knowledge of legal systems and legal bibliography, strong legal research skills, and experience working in a law library are required. Group instruction experience is required. Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with diverse groups of patrons and staff at all levels is required. Creativity and adaptability in the face of multiple simultaneous demands is desirable. Evidence of professional scholarly interest and potential to meet the University Libraries' promotion and tenure requirements is essential. The incumbent must have excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills and a strong service orientation. Must be able to work evenings and weekends on a rotating basis.

Preferred Qualifications:

Interest in and skills to apply Web 2.0 technologies in a professional setting. Experience working in an academic law library is preferred.

Salary Range: $58,000 - $60,000
